The opal’s tiny silica spheres bend light at different angles, and red is the longest wavelength, so it’s reflected and refracted at just the right angle to be more noticeable than other colors. This more rare phenomenon makes red more valuable compared to the shorter wavelengths of colors like blue and green, which are refracted more easily and are more common in opals.
